Maze Town

Shodoshima: beautiful nature and quaint townscapes.

Maze Town, a fun place to get lost while exploring intriguing shops and art.

The town of Tonosho on Shodoshima prospered for centuries as a gateway for both the flourishing sea trade and a popular religious pilgrimage. The town center is known locally as “maze town” because of its labyrinthine layout. The intricate network of streets is believed to have developed in the 14th century during a period of political unrest. Fearing that the war might spill over to their island, the locals designed the town to confuse any would-be invaders. Later, it also deterred marauding pirates. Even locals are known to lose their way on a dark night. The shops that have sprung up around the Yokai Art Museums, including cafés, gift shops and a dime-store candy shop, make it a fun place to spend half a day getting lost.

Setonouchi Shimamonoya

A shop stocked exclusively with local products from Shodoshima and the Setouchi area

Shima Monoya carries not only traditional Shodoshima products, such as olive oil, soy sauce and somen noodles, but also special products, each with its own unique story, from the Setouchi area. Of special note are soy sauces carefully selected by Shodoshima’s soy sauce sommelier, exquisitely handcrafted items made from olive wood, and beauty products made with the island’s high quality olives and olive oil. Many of these items, which range from clothing to household goods and accessories, can only be found here. Shima Monoya is also the official shop of Setouchi Style, a local magazine that introduces the treasures of the Setouchi area.

Enjoy Olive Wagyu Beef and fresh island-grown vegetables.

The menu of this local café focuses on foods produced on the island, including organically grown vegetables from two local farms and Olive Wagyu Beef. Olive Wagyu cows are fed the caramelized residue from local olive production. This results in beef that is high in oleic acid and extremely tender. The Island Veggies and Olive Wagyu Roast Beef Lunch is a delicious and healthy meal with three different cuts of beef. The restaurant also serves other meals featuring plenty of local produce and an original curry made with Olive Pork.

Mononoke-do

Dime-store candy, vintage toys and a shooting gallery.

This shop is just like an old-fashioned Japanese corner store, specializing in dime-store candy and vintage toys and stationary, as well as designer masking tape, memo pads and wallets. Yokai-themed towels and handkerchiefs make great gifts, and the shooting gallery is fun for children and adults alike. On the second floor is Yokai Art Museum 4, which exhibits works from the Yokai Sculpture Contest. Yokai of all types, including gruesome, cute and cool, can be found here in what was once a printing factory. This is the place to discover and enjoy the child within you.
